Vueron Technology (Vueron) announced on the 8th that it was selected as a winner in the Security & Solution category of the ‘WSCE 2023 Awards’ at the World Smart City Expo 2023 (WSCE 2023), the largest smart city event in the Asia-Pacific region, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The WSCE 2023, held from September 6th to 8th at KINTEX in Ilsan, gathered experts from over 60 countries, including representatives from more than 200 cities, governments, and companies in the smart city sector. This expo is the second-largest smart city exhibition globally and the largest in Korea, showcasing the future of sustainable cities.
The ‘WSCE 2023 Awards,’ held on the second day of the exhibition, recognize innovative projects and ideas that contribute to transforming cities into more sustainable and livable places. Vueron won in the Security & Solution category for its groundbreaking LiDAR-based Smart Crowd Analytics (SCA) solution, which was implemented to prevent incidents like the Itaewon tragedy by monitoring pedestrian traffic and congestion in narrow streets in real-time.
A Vueron representative explained, “We developed a system that accurately detects and analyzes crowd density in real-time, with the goal of preventing incidents like the Itaewon disaster. Our Smart Crowd Analytics solution, which is the world’s first LiDAR-based smart city solution of its kind, was introduced in Seoul, earning recognition for its innovation and excellence.”
The Vueron engineering team, in collaboration with the University of Suffolk in the UK, successfully implemented a project with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, using LiDAR technology to detect high-risk environments where more than six people are crowded in a space of one square meter. This project was praised for its contribution to ensuring public safety by enabling quick decision-making in control centers.
Jaekwang Kim, CEO of Vueron, stated, “To build smart cities, service providers and users need to make informed decisions. Unlike previous methods that relied on sample data, SCA provides precise population data at a granular level, such as narrow streets, which will be highly beneficial for smart city design, urban planning, and commercial analysis.”
Vueron’s SCA solution overcomes the limitations of low accuracy found in conventional video detection methods. It uses infrared sensors to detect individuals with near-perfect accuracy, even in low-light conditions. The solution can accurately measure distance, speed, and size in 3D, identifying even small or fast-moving individuals.
The solution also protects personal privacy by collecting point cloud data, allowing for meaningful big data analysis while safeguarding individual identities. This creates a foundation for identifying and regulating high-risk areas in advance.
The crowd analysis function of this technology is also noteworthy. With features like tracking, heatmaps, dwell time, and object ID assignment, it can be applied across industries for queue management, commercial analysis, and pedestrian safety in locations such as airports, shopping malls, and urban areas.
Kim added, “We are thrilled to see SCA’s technological capabilities recognized internationally. We will continue to enhance our LiDAR solutions and accelerate their adoption globally, positioning Vueron as a leader in solving core urban challenges in the smart city sector.”
